Dryer Vent Cleaning – Pittsburgh, PA
To some, dryer vent fires may feel like an irrational fear, but clothes dryers account for thousands of house fires a year. Failure to clean the dryer may put your home at risk of serious damage to your property and home. If your dryer vent hasn’t been cleaned in awhile, you could be at risk.
How do I know if my dryer vent needs cleaning?
Many cases of dryer vent fires happen because people don’t always know how to spot the signs that their dryer vent needs cleaning.
1. You’re noticing an increase in drying time.
If your dryer vent is clogged with lint, moist air stays longer in the dryer which makes it hard for your clothes to dry off. If you’re finding that your clothes just aren’t dry after a standard cycle, you probably need your dryer vent cleaned.
2. Dryer is starting to omit a burning odor.
If you start to smell an odor from your dryer, it’s most likely dryer lint. When lint or debris accumulates in your dryer, there’s an increased risk of fire or other negative effects.
3. There is a build up of dryer lint.
Whenever a dryer hasn’t had its ducts inspected and cleaned annually, lint can clog the dryer vents. If you see lint around the opening of the dryer, the vent system will need to be cleaned.
4. Dryer is hot on the outside.
When the dryer is unable to exhaust air properly, the dryer will feel very hot to touch at the end of a normal cycle.
When should I get my dryer vents cleaned?
To protect you, your family, and your home or business, we recommend that you have your dryer vent cleaned by a professional at least once a year.
Not only is it important to clean out your dryer’s lint trap, but also it is important to have your clothes dryer vent cleaned to remove flammable debris such as dryer lint, birds nest, and articles of clothing.
The benefits of a dryer vent cleaning include decreased drying time, reduced utility bills, increase dryer efficiency, and prevents dryer fires. A routine cleaning can also improve indoor air quality in addition to dryer efficiency and energy savings.
If a clogged dryer vent prevents proper ventilation, carbon monoxide can be released into the home. The monoxide leak could put several areas of your home at risk.
The Dryer Vent Cleaning Process
The dryer duct service that we offer is a cleaning of the entire dryer exhaust system. This includes everything from the back of the dryer, all the way out to the terminal cap outside. Our CDET (Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician) will slide the dryer out of the way, remove the transition duct, which is the piece that connects the dryer to the main sheet metal duct in the wall. We will hand clean the transition duct piece, and then clean the entire length of the permanent sheet metal duct that leads all the way to the outside.
This cleaning is done with a combination of our high-powered vacuum and our high-pressured air tools. We will attach our high-powered vacuum to one end of this duct; when the vacuum is turned on, it will place this duct under suction. While the duct is under suction, we will feed our specialized air tools through the duct, forcing all the lint and other debris back to the vacuum connection. All the debris will be sucked out and collected in the vacuum. The air tools will be fed throughout the entire duct, regardless of its length or number of turns.
Once all the lint and other debris has been removed, we will go outside to clean off the terminal cap, and pest guard as well. We will also make sure the terminal cap opens and closes properly. If a customer does not have a terminal cap or pest guard, one can be installed for them while we are there. Once the cleaning is complete, we reconnect the dryer, and put it back in place. The final step is to cycle the dryer to make sure it is exhausting properly before we leave. For safety and efficiency reasons, we recommend having your clothes dryer vent cleaned at least once a year to prevent fires and extend the life of your clothes dryer.
We also offer Pest Guards that are designed to fit over clothes dryer and bathroom exhaust vents. This helps to prevent birds and rodents from entering your home through the vents.
